Effect of the Outlet Temperature of Waste Heat Boiler on PCDD/Fs concentrations in Flue gas from Full-Scale Hospital Waste Incineration

Incineration is a preferred method of waste management, but the release of PCDD/Fs to the environment is a cause of serious concern. The de novo synthesis in the cooling system was considered as the main pathway for PCDD/Fs formation in waste incineration plants when conditions for achieving a high efficiency of combustion are maintained. The waste heat boiler (WHB) was necessarily used as the cooling system to recover waste heat in the commercial-scale incinerators. The outlet temperature of WHB inevitably affected the re-synthesis of PCDD/Fs in the cooling zones, thus producing an effect on PCDD/Fs concentration in flue gas. In this study, a WHB was employed as the cooling system in a full-scale hospital waste (HW) incineration plant with a capability of 8 tons per day to investigate the effect of WHB outlet temperature on PCDD/Fs emissions. Results showed that, the lower outlet temperature and the longer residence time (RT) resulted in the higher concentrations of PCDD/Fs. Emissions of PCDD/Fs at the outlet temperatures of 200 ℃, 400 ℃, and 500 ℃ were, respectively, 10.361, 6.219 and 2.011 ng I-TEQ m-3, but the outlet temperature had little effect on the concentration ratio of PCDDs to PCDFs (CRF/D) and the major types of 2,3,7,8-substituted congeners in the flue gas at the outlet. 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF contributed to 37% ~ 46% of the total I-TEQ values of PCDD/Fs at the outlet of the WHB.
