Study on the Effects of Adding Fe2+ and Fe3+ on Anaerobic Digestion Process of MSW19

Using three sets of small-sized bioreactors, the wet medium-temperature anaerobic digestion experiment was carried out. By monitoring the changes of pH, NH4+-N, VFA and CODCr of digested effluent as well as LFG producing process, the effects of adding Fe2+ and Fe3+ with the concentration of 0.213g/kgTS were studied comparatively on the anaerobic digestion process of MSW. The results indicate that Fe2+ and Fe3+ adding promotes the hydrolysis acidification and ammonification of microorganism in the initial period of anaerobic digestion, so that the concentration of VFA and NH4+-N increases rapidly, as its stable pH value decreases. In methanation stage, Fe2+ and Fe3+ can activate the biological activity of methanogenic bacteria, promote transformation and consumption of organic acids, protect from the accumulation of VFA, improve the removal of CODCr, and increase production and CH4 concentration of LFG. In the anaerobic digestion process, the content of propionic acid and its inhibition to LFG producing in the bioreactors with Fe2+ and Fe3+ adding gradually increase, therefore, the effective control measures ought to be taken to reduce the generation of propionic acid.
