Study on Ethanol Production from Kitchen Garbage by Acid-tolerant bacteria under Non-sterilized Fermentation
A strain of acid-tolerant bacterium was utilized to determine the feasibility of ethanol production from kitchen garbage through non-sterilized fermentation. Ethanol production from Kitchen garbage under pH of 4 in both sterilized and non-sterilized fermentation was compared in this study. Orthogonal experimental design was adopted to determine the optimum conditions. The result demonstrated that the isolated Zymomonas mobilis named GZNS1 could produce ethanol efficiently under pH of 4 without sterilization. The maximum ethanol concentration of 53 g/L could be obtained under the condition of fermentation time of 40h, pH of 4, temperature of 29℃, inoculum size of 9%. The process enjoyed the low cost and simple technology, which should be further studied to make it industrial applicable.
