Design of Pilot Device for Municipal Solid Waste Aerobic Composting

With urbanization development and rapid economic growth, a dramatic increase was lead to in municipal solid waste (MSW) production. Composting is a well developed and promised technology for treatment of organic waste. Aerobic composting device is of a necessary by which a series of changes of physical and chemical parameters of MSW were observed and the optimized parameters were obtained. A mathematical model was developed to static composting process of MSW based on the thermodynamics, kinetics of microbial growth and hydrodynamics. The model provided an excellent tool for explaining and demonstrating the complex interactions which occurred in the composting process. Based on the model and according to the prerequisite of maintaining suitable temperature for MSW degradation and the investigation and research, the reasonable size, leachate collecting and recycling system, air distributing, and malodor recycling system of a pilot scale aerobic ferment device were designed without leachate and malodor discharging. The device was of great significance to study the theory and parameters optimizing of composting, and to instruct the designing of field device in the future.
