RDL Treated Sludge: A Bio-Solid Additive for Organic Fertilizer

Biosolids are solid organic byproducts of purification systems that treat wastewater. They are created after wastewater processing and treatment leaves residuals, or solids, from wastewater treatment facilities.1 Primarily, they are used as natural fertilizer to improve the quality of land for agriculture and increased crop yields. RDL Pharmaceutical Laboratory, Inc., as a socially responsible company committed to protect the environment, initiated a study on how to utilize wastewater sludge for fertilizer. This study is in collaboration with the Chemical Engineering Department of the Ateneo De Davao University. The study focuses on the prospect of utilizing bio-solids from the treated sludge as additives for organic fertilizers. The bases for the determination of these bio-solids as appropriate additives are: (1) N-P-K analysis, (2) total microbial count, and (3) heavy metals content. Previous tests revealed that the treated sludge of RDL passed the standards as per regulations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). The recognition of these bio-solids as a good organic fertilizer additive is of quality.
