Composition and Generation Rate of Household Wastes in Beijing
Although residential wastes have been considered the most important source of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Beijing City, no recent data support the argument. In this paper, we present results of a sample survey on household waste generation and composition in Beijing, China. Sample communities were determined by integration of five indexes including family population, income, age, education and profession.A 10-day wastes were sampled from 113 households in different districts in Beijing City. The results show that the generation rate of household wastes is 0.233 kg/pers/day. The bulk density is 221 kg/m3, and the moisture content is 50.19%. Household waste approximately comprises 24.98% of the total MSW in Beijing, being not a main part of MSW anymore. The composition consists of kitchen waste, paper/cardboard, plastics, metals, glass, textiles and other wastes, proportions of which are 69.32%, 10.25%, 9.78%, 0.81%, 5.77%,1.34% and 2.73%, respectively. Discussions on correlationships between generation rates of household wastes and socio-economic factors indicate that generation rates of total wastes, kitchen wastes, paper and plastics show negative power functions to household population size.
