Household Waste Management by Vermicomposting in Rural Area
Vermicomposting is a production system which avoids the use of synthetically compounded fertiliger ,pesticides ,growth regulators and livestock of feed additives . To the maximum extent feasible organic farming system rely upon crop rotations ,crop residues ,animal manures , legumes ,green manures.Vermicompost also has immobilized microflora which continue their function in the soil . It is rich in vitamins ,enzymes ,antibiotics and growth hormones. It improves soil fertility and promote growth of plants.Culture of Earthworm and formation of biofertilizer is promoted by this process using household food waste .Earthworm castings improve the soil’s drainage and maintain temperature of soil by promoting growth of microflora. Vermicomposting system depends on maintaining a temperature of less than 350c (950F)in the system (Adwards A and N.O .2007),A case study of North America’s newest and largest process controlled vermicomposting fascility that handles 10,000 kg/day of Dairy Manure ( Herlihy,T.E.2007).Waste recycling is a preferred method in organic agriculture for effective managementof waste and an attempt was made to successfully utilize such waste as a potential substrate for growth of plants through vermicomposting.
