Environmental Education: A Tool to Improve Sanitary Practices of the Residents at Purok 10, Barangay 9-A, Davao City, Philippines

Water of Davao City has been known to be worlds second best. In some instances, its quality at its source is threatened by the presence of wastes resulting from the activities and sanitary practices of the locales. A previous study was conducted by the proponents to find out the quality and the extent of contamination of the groundwater of the Purok 10, Barangay 9-A. A survey was made to obtain descriptive data on household activities and practices. Groundwater and soil quality were determined through laboratory analyses. The result revealed that the groundwater of Purok 10, Barangay 9-A is unsuitable for drinking. It also revealed that most of the residents generally belong to the lower class of the society and they were doing unsanitary activities and practices. The proponents recommended appropriate environmental education and government interventions to correct unsanitary practices of the affected community.The Barangay officials (village officials) acted on the recommendations by initiating activities to remedy the situation such as environmental education. It was observed that the residents were gradually improving sanitary practices.
