Resident participation in Source Separation of Municipal Solid Waste in Beijing
The government of Beijing City boosted demonstration communities in separation of house waste in the 1990s. Till the end of 2007, near 4000 communities, 4.7 million people, have taken part in the separation activities. This paper presents the results of sample survey on resident participation in household waste separation at the source in the communities. A structure diagram of factors on resident participation rate is built. 372 households are surveyed with face to face questionnaire. The questionnaire is divided into six main parts, which are resident participation rate, separation intention, awareness factors, individual features, waste features and external conditions, respectively. Specific items for each part in the questionnaire are determined through literature researches, expert interviews and residents interviews, combining with Beijings municipal solid waste management status. The findings suggest that willing participation rate gets high scores and over 80% of interviewees are willing to carry out source separation. On the contrary, actual participation rate is relatively lower, The atmosphere for waste separation is the most important among all the social pressure perceived by residents. Neighbors and acquaintances recognition to waste separation would better promote their participation. In all the constraints perceived by residents, insufficiency of household living space is the biggest obstacle for recovery. Women played a significant role in source separation, and elder people has higher participation rate than younger. External conditions have more effect on actual participation rate of separate throw than on willing participation and actual participation in waste recovery behavior.
