Washing Pretreatment to Improve the Quality during the Regeneration of MSWI Fly Ash

Incineration has been the major treatment method of the municipal solid waste in Taiwan. In order to satisfy the goal of Zero Waste and Zero Landfill in the future, reusing the municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) ashes will be the most urgent problem. Bottom ash has been reused in many countries, but fly ash which contained heavy metals and dioxins was categorized as hazardous waste. It is difficult to regenerate because fly ash contains a high concentration of chloride. Many researchers had showed that the water-washing was a simple method to decrease the soluble salts in the fly ash, which could improve the operation process of the regeneration method. In this study, we summarized the results of the basic characteristics of MSWI fly ash by the water-washing process. It included the effects of chloride leaching and the behavior of heavy metals both in toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and in sequential extraction procedure (SEP). The chloride and the soluble heavy metals could be removed 20-80% and 30-50%, respectively. The results of heavy metals of both in TCLP and in SEP were showed that the washed residues were decreased the quantity of leaching.
