Hydrothermal Treatment of MSWI Fly Ash with Purpose of Pcdds/Pcdfs Destruction
This paper describes the research work on municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ashes treatment with purpose to destroy dioxins as well as heavy metals stabilization. In order to decompose PCDDs/PCDFs contained in the fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators, a hydrothermal reactor is used to provide a hydrothermal condition for fly ash to reach with carbohydrazide (CHZ). In the first step the fly ash with or without pre-treatment was mixed with water and heated under atmosphere; after boiling carbohydrazide is added and then the reactor was heated to its pre-set temperatures. No gas emission happened during the reaction process. The results showed that under the temperature of 518K and 533K the decomposition rates of PCDD/PCDF were over 80% and 90% respectively, but the toxic equivalent of PCDD/PCDF decreased only slightly or even increased for the re-synthesis of congener 2,3,7,8-TCDD/TCDF, which might be due to the highly chlorined congeners lose their chlorine atoms and intergrade to congener 2, 3, 7, 8-TCDD/TCDF during the hydrothermal process. Good stabilization of heavy metals was showed in all the experiments.
