Fly Ash Recycling at Coal-Fired Power Plants: Market Identification and Strategic Partnering

Coal-fired power plants produce more than half of the electricity consumed in the United States (Headwater Resources, 2006). Electricity, however, is not the only item that power plants produce. Numerous by-products are generated from coal-fired power plants including fly ash and flue gas. This article provides an overview of fly ash recycling at coal-fired power plants and discusses current trends and recycling methods in the field. In addition, this article discusses the potential uses for fly ash and the various businesses that utilize this by-product as a raw material. The discussion offers a complete life cycle analysis for fly ash including the collection, transportation, and processing to aid in the identification of potential markets. The various challenges and solutions to creating a successful fly ash recycling program are also given, such as logistics, equipment needs, and process planning. To complement this analysis, an overview of the strategic partnering necessary to make such a business model economically and operationally justified is offered.
