Photografting Modification of Polypropylene Membranes for Adsorption of Sodium Salicylate

Polypropylene (PP) functionalized membranes were prepared by photografting N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) with benzophenone (BP) as a photoinitiator, which was coated onto the membrane with two different procedures. Adsorption properties of the PP functionalized membrane to sodium salicylate from aqueous solution were investigated.Experimental results show that method Ⅱ, which is immersing the PP membranes in BP/n-heptane and subsequently in acetone for solvent exchange, increases the grafting degree of the poly(DMAEME). An enhanced grafting degree leads to an increase in adsorption amount of sodium salicylate. The adsorption behavior accords well with Langmuir equation with maximum adsorption amount of 0.088 mmol/g-membrane and Langmuir constant of 0.069 mmol/L for the membrane with grafting degree of 13.59%.
