Study on Hydrodynamics of High-gravity Rotating Zigzag Beds

Rotating packed bed(RPB) using centrifugal force of to intensify mass transfer is a high-gravity unit with high performance which was developed since 1980s. RPBs have been applied to absorption, stripping, distillation, polymer devolatilization, etc. The high-gravity zigzag rotating bed(RZB) is a new type of rotating bed. The rotor of RZB consists of stational disc and rotational disc. A number of circular baffles are homocentrically installed on the stational disc and rotational disk, forming zigzag channels for liquid-gas flow and mass transfer. The experiments of RZB unit were carried on in a rotor of 600mm-diameter with air-water system. The gas pressure drop and power consumption with two types of RZB rotors of mesh and shutter were studied. The results are followed: (1) The pressure drop increases with the increasing of the gas rate and rotational speed. And the pressure drop decreases rapidly when liquid introduced to the rotor. (2) The power consumption increases when liquid rate and rotational speed increases. And the power firstly decreases slightly and then is invariable with the increasing of gas rate when no liquid flows. (3) The empirical correlation of the pressure drop and the power consumption were obtained by regression with gas rate, liquid rate and rotational speed.
