Adsorptive removal of bilirubin with the CA/PEI blend membrane immobilized β-cyclodextrin
In this study, αβ -CD immobilized CA/PEI affinity membrane was prepared successfully. The membrane was characterized by SEM and mechanical analysis. The batch adsorption behaviours of bilirubin from aqueous solution as well as human serum of patients were investigated. The experimental result indicated that five hours were appropriate for covalent crosslinking reaction. The modified membrane showed better mechanical properties than that of the original, with a Youngs modulus of 0.12 GPa, and a strength of 8.2 MPa. The modified membrane had good adsorption capacity from aqueous solutions and the adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm. Nevertheless, the amount of bilirubin adsorbed from the serum was much lower than that from aqueous solution owing to the affinity between serum balbumin and bilirubin.
