Reactive Distillation for Esterification of Alcohol Mixtures-BuOH and AmOH
In this paper, esterification of n-butanol (BuOH) and n-amyl alcohol (AmOH) mixture with acetic acid (HAc) is studied. NRTL-HOC thermodynamic models are used for modeling the vapor-liquid and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium. The reactions are catalyzed by using Amberlyst-15 catalyst. Two designs for product separations after the RD column are considered: (i) By way of direct sequence: the overhead stream of RD enters a decanter, and the organic rich stream is totally refluxed to the RD. The bottom stream enters another distillation column to separate the esters. (ii) By way of indirect sequence: the RD bottom obtains the heaviest product amyl acetate (AmAc), and the top RD overhead is fed to a decanter for water separation. Part of aqueous phase is refluxed to the RD for reducing energy consumption.
