Synthesis and properties of sulfonated copolyimides as PEM for DMFC applications

A series of six-membered sulfonated copolyimides (SPIs) were synthesized by one-pot solution polycondensation from 4,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy) biphenyl-3,3-disulfonic acid (BAPBDS), 1,2-dihydro-2-(4-aminophenyl)-4-4-(4-aminophenoxy)-phenyl- phthalazin-1-one (DHPZDA), 4,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy) biphenyl (BAPB) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTDA). The SPI membranes had excellent thermal stability, high mechanical property and proton conductivity as well as low methanol permeability. The tensile strength of the membranes was ranged from 59.6 to 84.8MPa, which was higher than that of Nafion (r)112 (26.6MPa). Compared with the methanol permeability of Nafion (r)117(2.38×10 -6 cm 2 /s), the SPI membranes as-made here exhibited much lower methanol permeability ranged from 7.2×10 -8 to 9.2×10 -8 cm 2 /s depending on the DS of the polymers, respectively. All the membranes exhibited desirable proton conductivity ranged from 1.6×10 -3 to 4.2×10 -2S/cm at 95℃.
