SRIPT Clean and Efficient Technologies in PET Value Chain
China is the worlds largest polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producer and a major para-xylene (PX) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) consumer. In 2006, Chinas PET output was 15,960 kt, which was about 40% of the worlds total. It is forecasted that PET consumption in China will increase to 21,000 kt and 26,600 kt respectively in 2010 and 2015. SINOPEC is a major PET chain maker in China with its share in PX production being 61%, in PTA 50%, and in PET 15%. Nowadays, this group is restructuring production activities, and developing processes and technologies to lead this value chain to a healthy and sustainable development. Specifically, Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology (SRIPT), one research center wholly owned by SINOPEC, has developed catalysts and processes for clean and efficient production of PX, PTA and PET.
