ENHANCEMENT OF CATALYTIC PERFORMANCE OF MESOPOROUS MATERIAL FROM RICE HUSK SILICA BY ADDITION OF TITANIUM FOR PHOTOCATALYTIC DEGRADATION OF TETRAMETHYLAMMONIUM CHLORIDE
Photocatalytic degradation of tetramethylammonium (TMA) chloride in water on TiO2 was compared to that on TiO2/RH-MCM-41 in which the RH-MCM-41 was MCM-41 synthesized with rice husk silica and other reagents by hydrothermal method. The TiO2/RH-MCM- 41 catalysts were prepared by mixing TiO2 P25 Degussa with a slurry of RH-MCM-41 and calcination. The catalytic activities of TiO2 and TiO2/MCM-41 were determined under UV radiation with wavelength of 300 nm. The weight to volume ratio of the catalyst to the TMA solution was 1 g/L and all products were characterized by ion chromatograph. The reaction equlibrium was established in 30 minutes in deionized water without adjusting the solution pH. The TiO2/RH-MCM-41 had higher TMA adsorption (11%) than that of unsupported TiO2. The photocatalytic degration activity of TMA on all TiO2/RH-MCM-41s were higher than that on the unsupported TiO2. The 40%TiO2/RH-MCM-41 gave the highest TMA conversion of 85% after 60 minute while 4%TiO2 showed conversion of only 9%. The intermedates detected were tri-, di- and mono-methylamnium ions which were consecutively mineralized to ammonium ions. According to these results, ammonium ions were clearly generated in a moderate amount over all catalysts. The 40%TiO2/RH-MCM-41 produced the largest amount of ammonium ion (32%) similar to 60%TiO2/RH-MCM-41 at a reaction time of 60 minutes. In contrast, the pure TiO2 gave only 5% activity in ammonium generation at a reaction time of 30 minutes. Consequently, the high degradation efficiency could be enhanced by the adsorption of TMA on the support surface.
