Electrokinetic behavior on the surface of Polypropylene hollow fiber membrane modified by using Low-temperature plasma method
There were used two type monomers: acrylic acid (AA) and acryl amide (AM) to modified by low-temperature plasma treatment and graft copolymerization. FTIR (Fourier-Transform IR Spectroscopy) characterizations show that AA and AM have been successfully grafted onto the surface of PP membranes, respectively. Streaming potential measurements have been used to investigate the surface characteristics of modified membrane and original membrane by the equipment for streaming potential measurement which was made in our laboratory. The zeta potentials and charge density of the membranes were calculated from the streaming potential by using Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation and Gouy-Chapmann equation, respectively. The results show that the zeta potential of original membrane, 100%AA and10%AM grafted membranes are -12.73mV, -16.39mV, -20.44mV , The charge densities are 9.17×10 -6 C·m -2 , 11.8×10 -6 C·m -2 , 14.7×10 -6 C·m -2 , respectively. The change can improve the hydrophilic characteristics of membranes surface, especially on separating negative charge colloid, oil emulsion and so on.
