Quaternized Poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

In the present work, ABPBI with intermediate-high molecular weight has been synthesized by polymerization of 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid (PPA). Then a novel quaternary ammonium salt, ABPBI containing quaternary ammonium groups, was designed and synthesized by two steps. In the first step,functionalized ABPBI with tertiary amino side groups was synthesized; in the second step, quaternary ammonium groups was inducted into the functionalized polymer. The reaction products were characterized by FT-IR , 1 H-NMR. They both indicate that the tertiary amino groups have been converted to quaternary ammonium groups.
