A novel membrane with Polyrotaxanes and adsorption of organic micro-pollutants from water
The effects of added Polyrotaxanes (PR), a derivatives of α-CD, to Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes and PVA modified composite membranes in the filtration performance and/or adsorption property of membrane towards toluene in water were studied in the work. Chemical structures and morphological changes of the PVA-PR Terylene sample surfaces were characterized in details by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron micrograph (SEM).Results revealed that PVA and PR concentration had significant effects on the immobilization degree (ID) and water uptake (W). The results also showed that the contents of PVA (0-10%) and PR (0-3%) in casting solution affected the membrane resistance (Rm), total resistance (Rt) and influence the filtration property. It proved that the cutting-off rates and antifouling property of the membranes were both improved with the increase of PVA content. Furthermore, this kind of composite membrane possesses a good adsorption capacity to micro-pollutant toluene in water.
