Preparation and performance of mesophase pitch based graphite foam

Graphite foam was prepared from coal tar based mesophase pitch directly through foaming, carbonization and graphitization processes. The results indicate that the foaming temperature is at least 50 ℃ higher than that of its bubble fixing section, and the foaming condition is good at 600 ℃/1.5Mpa for this raw mesophase pitch. Thermal conductivity is direct proportion to bulk density which is controlled by foaming pressure,while a certain ratio of closed sells will appear when the foaming pressure is high enough.The resulting graphite foam was obtained with the interlayer spacing of 0.3365 nm, the specific compression strength of 2.8MPa and specific thermal conductivity of 95.4W/mK.
