Prohibitive effect of supercritical CO2 on liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene over Co/Mn/Br catalyst

The effect of adding supercritical CO2 into the p-xylene liquid-phase catalytic oxidation process has been investigated, which uses molecular oxygen as an oxidant and acetic acid as solvent. The results showed the oxidation of p-xylene to p-Toluic was severely inhibited when supercritical CO2 exceeded a certain amount, the conversion of p-xylene drops rapidly from 100% to 3.3%, meanwhile, the yield of terephthalic acid drops from 42.6% to trace. That means that supercritical CO2 works as an inhibitor rather than a promoter. Further investigation found that supercritical CO2 inhibits the step of hydrogen abstraction from methyl group, which may be due to that supercritical CO2 reduces the contact between catalyst and substrates.
