Ruthenium-catalyzed partial hydrogenation of 2-hydroxy-3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid to 5-amino-2-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzoic acid

Ruthenium supported on carbon (Ru/C) was found to be highly effective catalyst for partial selective hydrogenation of 2-hydroxy-3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (HDNA) to 3-amino-2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzoic acid (3-AHNA). The Ru/C was prepared through sol-gel method and characterized with XRD and TEM which showed that the size of Ru nanoparticles was around 3-5 nm. Ru/C showed high activity and selectivity to 3-AHNA (>99%) under optimized conditions, and the complete hydrogenation to 3-AHNA only took place when the partial hydrogenation completed. The dependence of the selectivity on a variety of reaction parameters was investigated in the present study. The results lend considerable insight into the reaction behavior. The MeOH was chosen as the feasible solvent. The Ru load amount was below 5%. The acceptable temperature range was 15-30 ℃,and hydrogen pressure should be controlled with 0.3-1.0MPa.
