Synthesis of Water-Soluble Ultraviolet Adsorbent Containing Polyether Initiated by Aluminum - Porphyrin

Synthesis of water-soluble UV absorbers by introduction of polyether on benzophenones was performed with aluminium-porphyrin as initiator.It was found that the molecular weight of the polymers showed a linear increasing with the mole number of monomer ethylene oxide (EO). The addition of UV-9 to the system didnt change that result. And the molecular weight distribution of polymers obtained by the initiator was very narrow, as indicated by the ratio of weight average molecular weight ( w M ) to number average molecular weight ( n M ). It was tested that n M w M / was 1.3. The influences of reaction time and temperature on polymerization were discussed and the optical conditions were 30 °C and 4.5h.The addition of aluminium-porphyrin resulted in a living polymerization of polyethylene oxide. In this particular living polymerization, theres no reactions termination and the molecular weight distribution of the polymer wasnt widened either at the presence of active hydrogen; by the contrary, the generated A1 O bond by exchange of Al 3+ complex with H + which brought chain transfer continued to initiate polymerization, In the polymerization of epoxy with metalloporphyrin,the initiator and the active hydrogen (transfer agent) play a joint role of initiation and the amount of initiator is the sum of metalloporphyrin and substances with active hydrogen.The new atoxic absorber was characterized by 1 H NMR and UV spectra and was compared with UV-9 both in the structure and performances. The impact of polyether chain on the Ultraviolet adsorption was investigated. The new polymer absorbent gave good performances with 50 or 100 polymerization degree while its function was limited by winding of long polyether if the degree was larger.
