Control of size distribution of spherical photo-crosslinked copolymer gel prepared from liquid-liquid dispersion

Spherical photo-closslinked copolymer gel is prepared by Kenics static mixer for control of gel particle size and size distribution. Photo-crosslinkable prepolymer ENT3400 and temperature-sensitive copolymer N-diethylacrylamide (DEAA) are used as gel material. ENT3400-DEAA mixture drops are photo-crosslinked by irradiation of UV light (main wave length 365 nm) after mixing in the static mixer.Sauter mean diameter (D32) of the gel particles swelled in deionized water is the range of 0.35-1.15 mm at 293 K in the experimental conditions. The drop size distributions in volume of ENT3400-DEAA gel particle are approximately a normal distribution. Equilibrium swelling ratio of the prepared gel particle is nearly equal to that of the gel crushed a sheet gel at various temperature, which suggest that ENT3400-DEAA network of the prepared gel particles are similar to that of the crushed gel. Dimensionless D32 for experimental data is correlated to the Weber number. The relationship indicates that the average gel size can be controlled reasonably on the basis of given temperature and preparation conditions of gel.
