Study on synthesis of low molecular weight polyacrylamide in aqueous solution

The synthesis of low molecular weight polyacrylamide (PAM) was investigated by addition of chain transfer agent (sodium formate) and inhibitor (hydroquinone) together in aqueous solution polymerization. The influencing factors on molecular weight of PAM in polymerization reaction including initiator dosage, concentrations of polymeric monomer, and amounts of chain transfer agent and inhibitor and reaction temperature have been studied. PAM with molecular weight of 5×10 3 g/mol was prepared under determined conditions that the concentration of acrylamide (AM) was 10%, the dosage of initiator was 10% of the amount of AM (ammonium persulphate and sodium hydrogen sulfite, ratio of oxidant/reducer was 1:1), the concentrations of sodium formate and hydroquinone were 1.47 and 25×10 -6 mol/L, respectively. The polymerization reaction went on 5hr at 80 ℃. The conversion of AM was above 95%.
