Study on Performance of Macromolecule Heavy Metal Flocculant CSAX and its Application

A new flocculant on the basis of starch-graft-poly(acrylamide)-co-sodium xanthate (CSAX) was synthesized by grafting copolymerization reaction of corn starch, acrylamide (AM), and sodium xanthate by using epichlorohydrin (EPI) as cross-linking reagent and ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as initiator in aqueous solution. The macromolecule flocculant was characterized by FTIR. The results showed that the CSAX can be successfully synthesized and has functions of removing both substance causing turbidity and heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. Therefore, it was possible to reduce some units in water treatment, making the water treatment system simplified greatly.
