Impact of organic bulking agents and pollutants on composting temperature

With the dramatic increasing rate and amount of municipal waste water treatment, how to handle the huge amount of the sewage sludge has been a critical issue in China. Sewage sludge contains heavy metals and organic pollutants (e.g., antibiotics etc.). Composting is an effectively way to recycle the solid wastes, but toxic metals and antibiotics in the solid wastes may inhibit the bioactivity of the functional groups of microbe in the composting process. The objective of this study was to determine the impacts of bulking agents and pollutants on the temperature composting process. Seven treatments were designed. Sewage sludge were co-composted with the inorganic bulking agent and organic bulking agents of straw and sawdust, respectively, added with the different levels of Cu, As, Cd and aureomycin. The results showed that the temperature of organic bulking agent treatments rose more rapidly than that of the inorganic bulking agent treatment. In addition, the stage period of >50℃ lasted longer for the organic bulking agent treatments. Of the two organic bulking agents,the straw treatment demonstrated the preferable thermophilic phase than sawdust treatment. The temperature dynamics showed that the addition of Cu, Cd, and As in the sewage sludge significantly interfered the composting process. However,the treatment with aureomycin displayed the different temperature processes. Aureomycin at a certain level did not affect the temperature increasing and thermophilic stage.
