Removal and recovery of hydrophobic contaminants by temperature-swing adsorption

Temperature-Swing Adsorption (TSA)is one of the most promising methods for removal of hydrophobic contaminants from aqueous streams. In TSA, both the adsorption and desorption are carried out only by shifting temperature within a few degrees across the phase temperature.Adsorption of phenol on temperature sensitive ENT-DEAA gel was investigated. The adsorption and desorption were reversible with temperature swings. The effect of gel particle size on adsorption and desorption rates were also investigated. In column adsorption-desorption operation mode, the desorption was promoted by holding the column at desorption temperature without feeding eluent. This resulted in the concentration of phenol in a small amount of flushing eluent. The results demonstrated the high potentiality of TSA not only for removal of hydrophobic contaminants in aqueous stream ut lso recovery f the adsorbed ontaminants.
