Pollution and Potential Ecological Risk of Heavy Metals in Bottom Sediments from Aha Lake

Potential ecological risk of Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cu and Zn in sediments from Aha Lake ,one of the five drinking water sources for Guiyang City, were assessed based on the method presented by H?kanson. For comparison, both the pre-industrial reference values and the environmental background values of heavy metals for Guiyang area were employed to study the potential ecological risk for each selected heavy metal. When the highest background values of heavy metals in normal particulate of sediments of pre-industrialization were taken as references, the accumulating order was: Zn > Cd > Cu >As > Hg > Pb, and the order of potential ecological risk was: Cd > Hg > As > Cu > Zn > Pb. When the background values for Guiyang area worked as references, the accumulating order was: Cd > Zn > Hg > Cu >As > Pb, and the order of potential ecological risk was: Cd > Hg > As > Cu > Zn > Pb. It was thus evident that Cd and Hg produced a higher ecological risk than the other metals, and are the main contributors at each sampling location to the potential ecological risk index, therefore they are the critical elements in terms of ecological hazard in Aha Lake.
