Aerobic sludge igestion y membrane aeration

Sludge reduction has been a challenging subject in biological wastewater treatment.Aerobic digestion by cryptic microbial growth is one of the most promising options for sludge reduction. On-ssite sludge reduction by membrane aeration was evaluated. The settled sludge was aerobically digested with oxygen supplied through oxygen permeable membrane immersed in the sludge bed.The sludge reduction rate was measured and compared to that of conventional aerobic and anaerobic digestion rates. The sludge reduction rate by membrane aeration with silicone hollow fiber and hydrophobic porous membrane were about 73%and 65%of aerobic digestion rate, and 134%and 118%of anaerobic digestion rate, respectively. The bulk TOC concentration increased to about 100 mg/L in the anaerobic digestion while it was about 20 mg/L in the aerobic and membrane-aerated digestions.Nitrogen compounds are accumulated in the bulk up to about 200 mg/L both in aerobic and anaerobic digestion although the nitrogen form was different:nitrogen oxides in aerobic digestion and ammoniacal itrogen in anaerobic digestion. n the ontrary, he ulk T-N concentration as s low as about 10 mg/L in the membrane-aaerated digestions. The membrane-aaerated digestion is effective in on-ssite sludge digestion without any deterioration in effluent quality.
