Use Multiple Headspace Extraction Gas Chromatographic to Detect the Migration of Xylene from Food Packaging Paper to the Air

During the process of pulp and papermaking, different types of additives have been added to improve the performance of packaging materials. The studies have found that the packaging materials were a source of contamination through the migration of substances from the packaging into food. Recently, the safety of food packaging materials has been receiving significant attention. Therefore, the migration studies of the potentially hazardous substances are a major area of investigation. The paper studied the migration of the potentially hazardous substances from food paper to the air. Xylene was used as the standard surrogate of volatile organic compounds. The time sequence of the multiple extractions in multiple headspace gas chromatographic (MHE-GC) technique was developed in this paper. It automated the study of process kinetics that involves volatile species. Real migration curves of xylene from paper packaging to the air was gained at 40 ℃, 70 ℃, 100 ℃, respectively. The migration process can be regard as first-order reaction.
