This paper presents the results of a survey carried out among process industries located in the Ratmalana area of Sri Lanka in order to understand the current status and use of safety practices and accident preventive measures adopted in their facilities. A questionnaire was prepared to gather views and comments from the industries in Ratmalana. Forty-six industries in this area were contacted and the questionnaire was sent for their responses. These industries are involved in manufacturing different types of products and processes such as textiles, metal fabrication and equipment manufacture, chemicals and pharmaceutical manufacture, food and beverages, printing related industries and plastic manufacturing industries. The questionnaire consists of three parts. In the first part the company information is asked. The second part looks at the process industrys safety practices or accident preventive activities currently adopted. The last section tries to gain an understanding of the industry on their knowledge on latest safety related issues in the world and whether they are interested in developing their knowledge more on accident prevention. From the responses received, 67% were from the medium scale industries in the Ratmalana industrial area. All these responders consider safety a priority over their profits and they have responded positively to the second part of the questionnaire. The technical information given on fire prevention, handling and use of hazardous substances and personal protective equipment show that all responders were observing these practices. Few do not adopt work place safe traffic rules and make sure that their purchased equipment respects technical safety standards. From the types of industries metal fabrication, equipment industry and the chemical and pharmaceutical industry have responded to the questionnaire with 67%. More than 50% of the respondents adhere to international standards which require them to have good accident preventive measure.About 73% of the industries responded have policies in their organization related to health and safety. However, hazard analysis techniques such as HAZOP studies are not done by many.
