Production of formic and acetic acid from lignin model compound by hydrothermal process

To investigate the influence of some related parameters on the conversion of lignin into formic and acetic acid, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, as lignin model compound, was oxidized at temperatures of 250-300 ℃ with oxygen supply of 30-120% and alkalinity of 0.2-1.5mol/L NaOH. The reaction time was fixed at 60 seconds. Results showed that there exited an optimal value beneficial to the yields of formic and acetic acid for each investigated parameter when other parameters were fixed for hydrothermal conversion of 2,6-dimethoxyphenol. Alkalinity could affect significantly the yields of formic and acetic acid. An excellent total yield of formic and acetic acid of about 67% was obtained at 280 with oxygen supply of 120% and alkalinity of 0.5mol/L NaOH.
