Modified ASM3 for full-scale WWTP simulation

A model based on modified activated sludge model no.3 (ASM3) containing soluble microbial products (SMP) formation and degradation was established for simulating a full-scale municipal WWTP in Shanghai, China. The ASM3 was firstly modified to describe the simultaneous storage and growth processes occurring in activated sludge systems under aerobic and anoxic conditions. Then, the mechanism of UAP and BAP formation and degradation by microorganism was considered separately in this newly proposed model.Three months simulation was conducted including soluble COD, NH4 + -N, NOX -N and T-N, and compared with measured data from Quyang WWTP. Results indicated that calculated effluent COD and T-N using this model were in good agreement with the measured data. It is also showed that besides inert soluble organic matters contributed most to the effluent COD, BAP and UAP played important parts on the effluent COD, and therefore demonstrated that SMP composed important portion of effluent soluble COD in WWTP and should not be neglected.
