Studies on washing pretreatment of MSWI fly ash as raw materials for Portland cement

As a hazardous waste, the characteristics of municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) fly ash in our country were investigated in this paper. Because of its high dioxin content and high leachable concentration of heavy metals, the disposal of MSWI fly ash without proper treatment may cause serious environmental problem.Recently, cement industry has played an important role in the management of solid wastes because it can utilize various kinds of wastes as either fuels or raw materials.Due to its high chlorine content, high calcium-silicon ratio and strong alkalinity,a direct co-incineration of MSWI fly ash in cement kilns may cause many problems to cement kiln and cement clinker. As an economical and effective dechlorination method for MSWI fly ash, washing pretreatment was studied in this paper, including the best washing pretreatment process and the optimum technological parameters,such as solid-liquid ratio, washing stirring time and so on. The results showed that under the condition of the solid-liquid ratio in the range of five to ten and about stirring time of 0.5 h and sedimentation time of 1~2h, the removal rate of chlorine in MSWI fly ash is over 95 percents.
