A Holistic Framework for Design of Cost Effective Minimum Energy Network (CEMEN)

Spiraling energy prices caused by rising energy demands and shortage of supply have made energy efficiency critical in reducing companies operating costs, cut down process emissions, improve a companys bottom line and ultimately ensure sustainability of businesses. Until today, pinch analysis technique has been widely used and regarded as one of the most powerful systematic design tools to enable designers toachieve maximum energy recovery (MER) and efficiency particularly for large-scale industries (as opposed to SME) with large energy demands. Note that the MER concept established through the advent of pinch analysis technique relates to the maximum amount of heat recoverable primarily via heat reuse and recycling. This paper presents a conceptual development of a holistic cost effective minimum energy network framework where the work considers beyond reuse and recycling from the traditional MER approach but all conceivable methods to reduce energy usage through energy elimination, reduction, reuse/outsourcing and regeneration. A key feature of the holistic framework is the new energy management (EM) hierarchy as a guide to prioritise process changes qualitatively as well as quantitatively. Finally, the minimum energy network will be cost-effectively designed using a graphical tool capable of screening inferior process options within the desired payback period known as the Systematic Hierarchical Approach for Resilient Process Screening (SHARPS) technique. This framework is envisioned to help a plant in achieving its true minimum energy targets.
