Application of electroplating sludge and pulverized fuel ash and special additive in the manufacturing of ceramsites
Electroplating sludge is a kind of hazardous waste listed in the national hazardous wastes catalogue. It must be treated legally and safely. What’s more, large amount of electroplating sludge are produced every year in the world. For example, the output of electroplating sludge is more than 30 thousand tons just in Shanghai during 2006. In the meantime, how to dispose the pulverized fuel ash rationally has become to be a difficult item. Although many articles have discussed recycling of the heavy metals of electroplating sludge, integral recycling methods were seldom provided. Herein,the utilization of wastes as secondary raw material was investigated. Three kinds of substances were pulverized respectively until the particles can pass through a sifter of diameter 0.150 mm. Firstly, the toxicity of leachates of electroplating sludge was tested, metal elements such as Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cd and Hg were not found in the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) leachates. Elements of Zn, Ni were detected and their content did not exceed the allowable limit set by China Environment Protection Association (EPA). According to the usual conditions of baking ceramsites,electroplating sludge was mixed with 55~85 wt% of pulverized fuel ash, 5~15wt% of special additive,and some water to produce ceramsites. The pre-baking temperature is 600 ℃ and pre-baking time is 20 min, while the baking temperature is 1150 ℃ and baking time is 15 min. After measurement of the single intensity and water content, the baking ceramsites orthogonal experiments were performed. Then, the high-intensity ceramsites were produced so that the hazardous wastes and solid wastes were thoroughly reused.
