Photodegradation of N-nitrosopyrrolidine and N-nitrosopiperidine in water by UV irradiation

Photodegradation of N-nitrosopyrrolidine (NPyr) and N-nitrosopiperidine (NPip) in water by UV irradiation was investigated. The results showed that UV irradiation was effective to degrade NPyr and NPip in water. Photodegradation reaction of NPyr and NPip by UV irradiation obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Solution pH had different effects on NPyr and NPip photodegradation. Products of NPyr and NPip degradation by UV irradiation were identified by using GC-MS and HPLC. Piperidine and pyrrolidine were confirmed as the primary product of NPyr and NPip, respectively. The primary products of NPyr and NPip photodegradation were considered as a result of N-N bond fission due to UV irradiation. Then piperidine and pyrrolidine were further degraded to various low molecular weight products, respectively.
