Study on the Effect of Inorganic Alkali on Reduction Potential of Two Different Reductants

In this paper, the reduction potential of four reduced bath systems,consisting of thiourea dioxide(TD),glucose and sodium hydroxide(NaOH), sodium carbonate(NaCO3) respectively, was measured. Consequently, the reduced bath system of TD-NaCO3 and glucose- NaOH were chosen for dyeing on cotton fabrics with sulphur dyes. Also, the value of K/S of the dyed cotton fabrics was measured. It comes out to the following results: 1. The negative reduction potential of the reductant used with NaOH is bigger than that of the same reductant used with NaCO3. Thereby,when the reductant is the same, alkali can be used to adjust the reduction potential of the reduced bath system. 2. The order of the negative reduction potential of the four reduced bath systems mentioned above is as following, TD-NaOH(-1000~-1200mV)>TD-Na2CO3(-800~-850mV)>glucose-NaOH(-650~-800mV)>glucose-Na2CO3(-600~ -750mV). 3. The dyeing effect of cotton fabric dyed with sulphur dyes in the reduced bath system of glucose-NaOH is as good as that treated by traditional dyeing process. Therefore, glucose-NaOH possibly can replace sulfureted hydrogen(Na2S)used for dyeing cotton fabrics with sulphur dyes. The value of K/S is 25.8(Black), 21.5(Navy blue), 15.9(Yellow-brown) and 20.1(Red-brown) respectively. While the value of K/S of the cotton fabrics dyed in the reduced bath system of Na2S is 22.8(Black), 24.2(Navy blue), 9.0(Yellow-brown) and 22.1(Red-brown) respectively.4. The dyeing effect of cotton fabrics dyed with sulphur dyes in the reduction system of TD-Na2CO3 is differ from that treated by traditional dyeing process. The value of K/S is 27.7(Black), 25.2(Navy blue), 9.0(Yellow-brown) and 9.5(Red-brown) respectively.Consequently, the two ecotypic-environmental reduction systems can be used for dyeing with sulphur dyes to replace Na2S , the representative of traditional reductant.
