A Field Trail on Underground Coal Gasification in Zhong Liang-shan Coal Mine
A new process of underground coal gasification has been demonstrated recently through a successful field trail in Zhong Liang-shan coal mine of Chongqing, China. The field trail is featured by man-built pinnate channels and controlled moving injection point in underground coal seams, and makes use of a mixture of steam and air with various levels of oxygen enrichment, to test the process concept for relatively thin coal seams. Steady conditions, reported in this paper, were achieved in the field trail which produced high quality syngas. The field trail measurements with air and two levels of oxygen enrichment for temperature profile, the concentration development of the major syngas constituents, and the product gas heat value, are discussed. The results show that O2-enriched operation provides a method for controlling the H2/CO ratio in the product syngas and that a high heat value gas can be made.
