Adsorption of four kinds of dyes by anaerobic sludge
Lab-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the sorption behavior on four different dyes by anaerobic sludge. Effects of pH, sulphate concentration and temperature on sorption behavior were studied. The coefficients of Langmuir and Freundlich equations of dyes adsorption by anaerobic sludge at different temperatures were given. The results showed that the sorption of the four selected dyes on the sterilized sludge reached equilibrium in 4h; pH had significant effect on anaerobic adsorption behavior and the adsorption capacity of anaerobic sludge decreased with the increase of pH value, the maximum and minimum adsorption capacity of dyes occured at pH of 3 and 11. Higher adsorption capacity at low pH value may be due to the electrostatic attraction between negatively charged dye anions and positively charged sludge surface. The adsorptive capacities increased with the decrease of temperature and the increase of sulphate concentration. When the sulphate concentration was from 0 to 30 mg/L, the adsorption capacity increased at least 40%. The adsorption behaviour of four kinds of dyes could be described quite well by the Freundlich model.
