Disruption of Viral Pathogenesis Following Patient Exposure to Hyperbaric Environments with Altered Inspired Gas Mixtures
There is a broad spectrum of susceptibility to, and virulence of, viral infections. Some of this variance is controlled by the hosts genetics 8,13,25,29,46,50 while some is the consequence of the hosts prior life experiences 43,44,50. This inconsistency in severity of clinical response to the same infecting agent has prompted many inquires into the innate capacities of the mammalian cell to resist such infections 3,4,9,24,51 Harnessing the power of these inherent anti-viral mechanisms is a compelling therapeutic stratagem.Further, non-pharmacologic interventions avoid the untoward consequences of all drug-based regimens, these being, direct toxicity, drug interactions, and the universal aftereffect of inducing resistant viral mutations.
