Experimental and numerical comparison of the density current movement induced by instantaneous inflow on steep slope

The present paper studies the types of the density current induced by instantaneous inflow on steep slope which intrudes into quiescent water using flume experiments and numerical method. The experiments used several different conditions of sediment concentration by volume or other fluids which moves into different water depths. Meanwhile, this research recorded the movements of the saltwater, oil, sediment-laden flow, and debris flow intruding into quiescent water by digital video system and discussed the types of the formed density current and the movement phenomenon. The present research also employed the two-layer shallow water computation model to simulate the intrusion phenomenon induced by these flows. A finite volume computational scheme suitable for simulating such flows is presented and applied to the intrusion of these surges into shallow quiescent water.
