Numerical modelling of two debris flows in the Dolomites(Northeastern Italian Alps)
This work examines two debris-flow events that happened recently near the popular Italian mountain resort of Cortina dAmpezzo; the material transported by these events invaded a very busy national road, dammed the main valley river and only for fortunate circumstances no vehicles were involved. Since in the same area there are many other similar geo-morphological situations which present high debris-flow risk, the study of these recent events is particularly important. Data from field topographic surveys and from the rain gauges of the valley are used in order to build a trustworthy numerical model for deposition simulation. In order to simulate the behaviour of nearby potentially dangerous basins, back analysis calculations have been performed to characterize the material properties. The FLO-2D code has been critically used for the numerical simulations.
