Experimental study on the thixotropy of viscous debris flows
The rheological characteristics of natural viscous debris-flows with gravels were measured by using a self-designed plate-ring rheometer. The experimental results show that normal stress and sliding friction play a major role in action between grains in the sheared slurries in the initial regime at low shear rate (du/dy <10 s1). The stress constitutive relation is described by a power formula with a negative exponent that implies the material is shear thinning. The stress-strain relationship displayed hysteresis. The thixotropic constitutive relation for debris-flows was disclosed by calculating thixotropy energy and the comparison between thixotropy energy and movement factors.
