The Study on Pharmacognostic Identification of Panax Ginseng
Panax ginseng, the root and rhizome of Panax ginseng C. A. Mey., is one of the most widespread herbal drugs applied in traditional. Chinese medicine (TCM) for a long history. As far as we know, as one of the oldest tonics, the earliest record of Panax ginseng was in 《Shen Nong Materia Medica,A.D. 102-200》of E. Han Dynasty. Its properties and taste are sweet, slightly bitter and warm. It enters the spleen, lung and heart meridians. The functions are to supplement primordial qi, prevent collapse and promote the production of body fluid, calm the nerves, etc. The main groups of secondary metabolites found in Panax ginseng are ginsenosides, polysaecharide, volatile oil, organic acid and esters, etc. Ginsenosides are the main active constituents of Panax ginseng. Studies have revealed that Panax ginseng possesses the bidirectional regulation effects on central nervous system.In addition, Panax ginseng also has the functions of nootropie effects, strengthening heart,anti-ischemia, expanding blood vessels, protecting and stimulating hematopoiesis, anti-thrombns,promoting metabolism and strengthening immunization, etc1.
