Comparison of the pharmacological effects of Panax ginseng and Panax quinoquefolium
Detailed medical application of Panax ginseng (P.G.) was first found in Shen-Nong Herbal Classic (神農本草經) around 200 A.D.and Panax quinoquefolium (P.Q.) was first introduced in Essential of Materia Medica (本草備要) in 1694 in China.P.G.is recognized as stimulant and invigorates Yang,whilst P.Q.is calming and nourishing Yin.The pharmacological effects of a herbal drug are depend on what kind of the bioactive components and its quantity contained.The most important bioactive components contained in P.G.and P.Q.are ginsenosides,then polysaccharides,and glycoproteins.The contents of Rb1,Re,and Rd in P.Q.are higher than they are in P.G..In P.G..,the contents of Rg1,Rb2,and Rc are higher than they are in P.Q.P.G.had a higher ratio of Rg1:Rb1,and which was lower in P.Q.After hours steaming process,the total ginsenosides will decrease for more than 30%.However,some individual ginsenosides (Rg2,20R-Rg2,Rg3,Ph1 and Rh2) are increased,whilst some (Rb1,Rb2,Rb3,Pc,Rd,Re,and Rg1) are decreased.However,the variation of the contents of total ginsenosides,and individual ginsenosides,especial in P.Q.are high.Both P.G.and P.Q.are general tonic and adaptogens Rg1 and Rb1 enhance CNS activities,but the latters effect is weaker,Thus,for the higher contents of Rg1,P.G.is stimulant or hot,while P.Q.is calming or cool to CNS for it contents majorly Rb1.Rg1,panaxan A and B.from P.G.are good for diabetis.Rg1 enhance and Rb1 inhibit angiogenesis.Rh2,an antitumor agent,can be obtained from Rb1 by steaming process.Contents of Re in P.Q.is higher than in P.G.for 3-4 times.The vasorelax,antioxidant,antihyperlipidemic,and angiogenic effect of Re are reported.Thus,for the CNS hot wound healing and hypoglycaemic effects,P.G.is better than P.Q.For anticancer effect,the P.Q.is better.
